MF Digital Duplicator Review and Case Study

MediaShifter logoCase Study with MediaShifter & RipStation

The Company:

Formed in early 2007, MediaShifter is New Zealand's largest CD ripping service. MediaShifter's business model is to support  audio and video installers who provide custom multimedia system installations and service.

The Situation:

High-end multimedia installations require the best in audio and video technology and along with this technology comes the need for ease of access to the digital content. With some clients having an excess of 4,000 CDs in their collection, making the data migration to a state-of-the-art multimedia system can be difficult and time consuming.

The Solution:

MediaShifter looked at various automated solutions for data migration and MediaShifter selected MF Digital's RipStation for a variety of reasons.

The RipStation is a fully automated CD and DVD ripping system with powerful metadata management software. Since MediaShifter is the only CD ripping organization in New Zealand who is licensed to format-shift music onto music servers, it is critical the metadata is accurate and consistent. The RipStation software offers a variety of configuration settings to fully control the metadata information going to these multimedia systems.   "After all, music must sound good and look good,"  says Mr. Plank, CEO MediaShifter.

The Equipment:

MediaShifter uses several of the MF Digital RipStation units.

The 7601X RipStation: An automated, single drive, 75 disc capacity CD ripping system for small jobs and reject processing.

The 7602 RipStation: An automated, two drive, 300 disc capacity CD ripping system used in larger jobs.

The 7604 RipStation: An automated, four drive, 300 disc capacity CD ripping system used in larger job processing and has allowed MediaShifter's to expand their operation and workflow.

"What We Like"

During the establishment phase of MediaShifter, many products were evaluated.
The principal differentiators which put RipStation above the rest are:

  1. Good support from software ripping vendor such as MF Digital's Ripfactory software.
  2. The robots are physically robust. Whereas many similar robots have plastic chassis, the RipStation has a commercial factory-floor feel to it.
  3. The pick-rate is very good. We have about 1 reject per 1,000 CDs…and most of these rejects are due to poor media (i.e. we’ve had CDs with chewing gum on them!)

"The key attribute to MediaShifter's success is the backbone equipment and it's ability to process jobs without human intervention.  Without the automation of RipStation to format-shift audio and video to our multimedia installations, our only alternative was a manual process - a process to slow and expensive for our business model to succeed.  MF Digital is a partner with our organization and a key component to our overall solution."   - Stephen Plank, CEO.
